The new control software called Virtuoso(, answers the need for a digitally automated learning system for in-classroom instruction. It also connects teachers virtually to students outside the actual lecture hall. Virtuoso is instructor control software that is designed to enhance Sonys versatile line of multimedia language learning systems and products. This plug-and-play solution can go into any existing PC lab, residing on the network along with other popular Windows(-based applications. Virtuoso instructional control software is the ultimate teachers assistant, said Ron Remschel, national sales and marketing manager of education systems for Sony Electronics Broadcast and Professional Company. It places language instruction at the teachers control. Through the network it allows them to assign lessons, monitor student progress, answer questions and, more importantly, be within earshot of their students work at all times. -more- When coupled with Sonys Soloist( Digital PC Comparative Recorder software, Virtuoso software products is an integrated solution for a complete digital multimedia learning system. Unlike Sonys Symphony(/Conductor(/Soloist system, which uses hardware and an analog cable network to perform real-time audio communications and many remote control functions, Virtuoso software performs these functions digitally through a PC LAN. According to Remschel, the Virtuoso software does not require any additional hardware other than PCs with sound cards, a network using TCP/IP protocol and headsets. Using voice over IP technology, the Virtuoso software controls digital audio transmission between the teacher and students as well as among the students. Virtuoso software is similar in appearance to the Conductor Companion Software and will operate similar to a Symphony system. Audio communications are full duplex, allowing instructor Monitoring, Intercom, All Call, Group Call, modeling and random pairing. Before being transmitted, audio is compressed to minimize network bandwidth usage. Remschel said that Sonys Virtuoso software answers the needs of educators for a flexible, adaptable, PC-based system that features an open-ended platform with room to grow beyond the traditional brick-and-mortar classroom. It is also backward compatible with legacy systems. The key benefits of Sonys Virtuoso instructional control software include the ability to: Customize user interfaces that can be set up based on a teachers preferences; Control and monitor each workstation/pupil via a single screen; Launch and open lessons for student, administer multiple choice tests, show an audio or video clip and have students write a response; Divide classes into groups and assign different exercises; Conduct individual teacher/student interaction; Listen, digitally record and save a log/portfolio of the students progress; Track student attendance and keep progress notes on students for parent/teacher review; Pair students together to practice speaking in a conversational manner; Screen share, intercom and launch any software application; Disable all other applications on the desktop to keep students focused on the lesson; and Along with control of Soloists transport (play, stop, etc ) functions, Virtuoso software provides remote control functions such as: Open and Close files, Disable and Enable Windows, Copy files to the students desktop, Launch files, Collect Recordings, Set and Clear bookmarks. Virtuoso software also has Internet browsing control. In addition, Virtuoso software allows for simultaneous student screen monitoring with selectable keyboard and mouse sharing, screen modeling, sending a teacher screen, and blanking screens all in near real-time. Also, with currently planned future versions of Virtuoso software, it will be possible to add an ER-8020 educational student recorder as a program source allowing for normal or two-times speed copying from analog to digital and from digital to analog. Virtuoso is scheduled to be available this summer 2001 via a software download from the Internet. Pricing will be based on a per-connection basis.
